Holistic Care

We are proud to be one of the few sanctuaries that embrace holistic care and therapies as part of our ethos.  As such, we use holistic therapies alongside the superb and professional care that our vets give to the Remus animals, including Aromatherapy, Shiatsu, Reiki, and self-selection herbs.

Furthermore, Remus was the first Sanctuary in the UK to be chosen by the Shelter Animal Reiki Association organisation in America to be their founding UK Sanctuary. World-renowned Kathleen Prasad and Leah D’Ambrosio have been to Remus a number of times to run hugely exciting and informative Reiki workshops.  We are very proud of our connection with Kathleen and the SARA organisation.

We are proud to be associated with:

  • Dena Schwartz of Holistic Approach who introduced us to the benefits of holistic care and we are constantly amazed at the effects that these therapies have on our animals
  • Kate Granger of Equibliss who is an Equine Shiatsu and Equine Cranio-Sacral Therapist
  • Kirsty McIvor of Hedgerow Healing who uses aromatherapy with the animals
  • Kelly Anderson Animal Physiotherapist who works with our animals

Horses are significantly more intuitive than we are and they are so well aware of the benefits of these therapies or treatments that they receive, they they often queue up to ensure that they get their turn!

Whilst we do not necessarily expect the therapies and treatments to cure medical conditions, we do know that without question they put our elderly or sickly animals into a much better emotional and mental state to help them deal with the many problems that they have.

It is not just the horses that receive the benefits of holistic care, all of the animals are given the chance to benefit from the therapies or treatments, and all respond in the same way as the horses, they know what they need and they choose what they need. The animal chooses whether or not it wants to receive a therapy, this is the whole point, they decide, we do not decide for them.

We have a team of volunteer Reiki practitioners, many of whom attended the SARA workshops. These practitioners give freely of their time and knowledge to come weekly to the Sanctuary to give Reiki to our animals, and for this we are eternally grateful.

If you would like to get involved with our holistic programme by offering Reiki or other therapies, please do get in touch with the Sanctuary, the animals would benefit enormously from having more treatment.
